Most people are in agreement about the fact that lavender essential oil is a great oil for relaxation but not everyone believes in the power of aromatherapy. Although aromatherapy has been around for centuries, even before it was officially called aromatherapy, there are skeptics who are not convinced of its powerful abilities. The truth is that aromatherapy is not something that you need to believe in. There is tried and true scientific research to show the essential oils such as lavender essential oil can work to calm your mind. The psychological effects are not the only benefit but they contribute to the overall effects and appeal of aromatherapy.
The way it works is that your sense of smell is connected to the limbic system in the brai n which means that when you get a whiff of lavender essential oil your brain receives the chemical compounds directly and it has an effect o your mood, memory, and focus. Lavender essential oil, in particular, interacts with your GABA neurotransmitters to help you feel calm and relaxed. There’s something to be said for the fact that your central nervous system is connected to your sense of smell. That’s why when people smell certain things it invokes certain memories that have an emotional response. These things are all connected because your body is a wondrous thing. Research has shown time and again that lavender essential oil, as well as other oils, can be effective in meditation, yoga, and just to sniff every now and again to help you feel calmer, grounded, and more Zen.
Other essential oils besides lavender oil that have a similar effect include oils such as bergamot oil, lemongrass oil, and vetiver oil. These oils can be used in synergy to create a powerful blend
to aid sleep or even as a mild sedative to create a sense of intense inner peace. You should be warned though that although most essential oils can be used topically, they need to be diluted with the
correct carrier oil so as not to harm the skin and result in irritation. The same applies for lavender essential oil. That being said, if you are using the oil for aromatherapy, you can just place a few drops in a diffuser, or directly onto fabric (such as a pillow) to be absorbed directly into your senses.
There are different opinions as to which is the best, most potent oil for relaxation, but I think that it is generally accepted that lavender essential oil is top of the most famous list. Nevertheless, not everyone actually likes the smell of this oil which means that you might want to try the other effective oils mentioned above to find the one that you can enjoy most and works well for you. Rarely are essential oils a one-size-fits-all endeavor and that’s clear when it comes to aromatherapy. If you don’t like lavender essential oil, just try something else instead!
